Mr. Robert Albertus Young, Jr., 69, of Lancaster passed away Thursday, March 21, 2019 at MUSC Health - Lancaster Medical Center. He was born September 16, 1949 in Lancaster, a son of the late Robert Albertus Young, Sr. and Mary Lou Hegler Young. Mr. Young was a special man. He was a brother and teacher. He was associated with the Richland County School District for 27 years, teaching world history at Spring Valley High School and also at Richland North East. Mr. Young was also an historical researcher and a cowboy.The family will receive friends from 2:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. Sunday, March 24, 2019 at Lancaster Funeral Home.Mr. Young is survived by a sister, Mary Lynn Young Farr and her husband James of Woodstock, Georgia; a brother in law, Wylie Vaughn Sr. of Lancaster; four nephews, McKendree Farr, Taylor Farr, Wylie Vaughn, Jr. and Tony Vaughn; and two nieces, Crystal Carnes and Melinda Woodhurst. I just learned of Mr. Young's passing. I took his History class at Richland Northeast in 1996.

I still remember the homework assignment he gave us on our very first day of class. Without telling us why, all he asked us to do was to walk outside that evening and look up at the sky for a few moments. He explained the next day that the purpose of the assignment was to prompt us to try and grasp the notion of space continuing to infinity. That has always stayed with me.

I am going to miss him, and I regret that future students will not have the opportunity to benefit from his wisdom and sense of humor. Sending my prayers and condolences to his family and friends.

The RNE Class of 1987 will forever remember Mr. Young as a teacher and friend. He is always talked about when we are together, in fondness. There are few teachers who leave a mark on your heart and mind like that. Rest easy.

Anyone who has done research on their family tree has seen Robert's handiwork. He loved doing the research, visiting cemeteries, and updating the files. We've been swapping emails since before 2008. I wish I had known that he was back in Lancaster, I would have loved to have visited him.

I never met Robert but our Williams families were connected...he always sent me updates on what he would find...I knew I had not heard from him in several years and he never answer any emails....so sorry I never met him...listening to the wonderful things that everyone has said about him tells me he was a very special person....Rest in Peace Robert...

Im going to miss Mr. Young he was a sweet man inside out im going to miss just stoping by his room and just listening to him talk about tge things he used to do wen he was able. Or sometimesi would stop to answer his light and he would want a bag of chilps and to always here him say Thank You and I appreciate you so much made my day. May the Lord continue to give you all peace in knowing that his living was not in vain he touched so many some knowingly and some unknown...Continue to rest in the Lords almighty hands.....Sending continued prayers to his family and Crystal....💖💖💖

He was a very caring man who never wanted to be a problem. He had a heart if hold. We talked a lot during his stay with us at LLC. I would stop by and we would talk about lits if things. He will be missed by so many. He was special to me.

Mr Young was the finest teacher I had during my four years at RNE; I had the privilege of taking a class with him each of my four years. Despite a plunking class ring to the top of the head, Mr Young truly cared about his students and their development.

For decades he would stop and see my family even after they relocated to Louisiana after my graduation. For those who saw him regularly I know you will miss his “Cowboy Goatee”. I will never forget his stories of traveling the highways researching his extended family. Heaven is a better place with him at home, earth certainly was during his lifetime.

Robert and I taught together for many years at Richland Northeast HS. I treasured him as a friend and we loved going to Fuddruckers for a hamburger and a visit with a long conversation! We could sit there for hours. I will think of him every time I pass by that restaurant. I will miss his kind words, genealogy expertise, and love of history. We were really history nerds together. I spoke to Robert Tuesday afternoon and I am so glad I had that opportunity. I wish I had known that it would be our last time to talk. I hope he knew that he was loved and respected. To Robert's family: You have lost a dear brother, uncle, and friend and I send my sympathy and my prayers.
