A graveside service for Robert Victor Davis, Jr., 82, of Lancaster, SC, will be held Monday, November 6, 2017 at 11 a.m. at Westside Cemetery with the Rev. Shelly Holder officiating.Mr. Davis died Thursday, November 2, 2017. Born December 21, 1934 in Lancaster, SC, he was the son of the late Dr. R. Victor Davis, Sr. and Sue Mae Laney Plyler Davis. He was preceded in death by his brother, Ralph Plyler Davis. He was an alumnus of Duke University (Chemistry), The University of North Carolina (Law), The University of South Carolina (Bachelor of Science in Accounting and Master of Business Administration), and the Defense Department Language Institute, Monterey, California (Russian). He was a member of American Mensa, INTERTEL, Top-One-Percent Society, Phi Alpha Delta Law Fraternity International and National Association of Accountants. He served in the United States Army branch of the National Security Agency at Chitose, Hokkaido, Japan. After leaving the Army, he worked for several years in the Tax Department of Springs Industries, Inc, Lancaster, SC. Upon being graduated with a MBA, he went to work in Orangeburg, SC for the Wannamaker Chemical Company which evolved into Ethyl Corporation/Albemarle Corp. Mr. Davis was an avid collector. He had a large library on many diverse subjects. History, geography, geology, theology, sociology, art, design, travel, humor and languages. He and his wife collected early North Carolina pottery, Catawba Indian pottery, English watercolors, sixteenth thru twentieth century etchings and engravings. Their favorite vacations were trips thru New England searching out rare and unusual books and antiques. His favorite places included Monterey, California; Hokkaido, Japan; Chapel Hill, North Carolina; and Manchester, Vermont. He loved humor and liked to see people laugh. He loved knowledge and intelligence. Surviving are his wife, Joanna B. Davis of Lancaster; and numerous cousins including Elizabeth Wilson of Great Falls, SC, Rod Plyler of Lancaster, Jo Anne Plyler of Jacksonville, FL and Mike Shannon of Tucson, Arizona. The family suggests memorials may be made to The Archives, First United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 608, Lancaster, SC 29721.
