Mr. Mendel Johnson, 74, of Lancaster passed away Thursday, November 22, 2018 peacefully at his home. He was born March 19, 1944 in Lancaster, son of the late Thomas Jack Johnson and Annie Sowell Johnson, grandson of paternal grandparents, the late Roy Johnson and Mollie Phillips Johnson and maternal grandparents, John Gilliam (Jack) Sowell and Candice Ledelle Horton Sowell. Mr. Johnson attended Freedom Free Will Baptist Church. He loved his family. Married to the love of his life, Nancy Plyler Johnson for 54 years. Mr. Johnson retired from Springs after 42 years as a supervisor. After retiring he started working on appliances. In his earlier years he loved working with wood, building cabinets, picture frames, etc. He loved going to Lancaster Motor Speedway to watch his brother, Joe Johnson and nephew Pebo race. He also loved to go to the go cart track and watch his grandson, Robbie race. He loved watching football and old westerns. Mr. Johnson was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend to many.Funeral services will be held 3:00 pm, Sunday, November 25, 2018 at Freedom Free Will Baptist Church with the Rev. Mitch Ingram officiating. Burial will be in the Lancaster Memorial Park.Mr. Johnson is survived by his wife Nancy Johnson; three daughters, Amy Powers and her husband Joel, Lisa Massey, Stacey Aldridge and her husband Alan Aldridge all of Lancaster; seven grandchildren, Robbie Powers, Kena and Heather Mackey, Kacey Davis (Austin) Kody Hunter, Kaylin and Madison Aldridge; ten great grandchildren, Kyla, Kalaya, Kariyah Mackey, Dakota, Krista, Chandler Ray, Gage, Landree, Adrianna Davis, Cayden Aldridge; brothers, Harold “Buddy” Johnson and his wife Theresa, Jackson Lee Johnson, Joe Johnson and his wife Glen, Lonnie Johnson and his wife Sherry, Tommy Johnson (who stayed with Mr. Johnson) all of Lancaster and Jamie Johnson of Monroe; four sisters, Faye J. Kersey and her husband Wayne of Lancaster, Agnes J. Cauthen and her husband Ronnie of Kileen, Texas, Sue J. Hollins of Lancaster and Ann J. Arrington of Monroe; a very special brother in law, David Plyler (Linda); and sister in law Irene Plyler. He was preceded in death by a brother, Charles Johnson and five sisters, Doris Carter, Ruth Jordan, Bobbie Jean Poston, Mollie Roddey and Sara Johnson.The family will receive friends from 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm Saturday, November 24, 2018 at the Lancaster Funeral Home and other times at his home.The family suggest that memorials be made to Freedom Free Will Baptist Church, 1697 North Rocky River Road, Lancaster, SC 29720.Lancaster Funeral Home & Cremation Service is serving the family of Mr. Johnson.
