Robert Larry Thompson, 76, of Waxhaw, NC passed away June 26, 2019 at his residence. He was born November 30, 1942 in Monroe, NC to the late Robert Luther Thompson and Thomasine Mosley Thompson. He leaves behind to cherish his memory, his beloved wife of 48 years, Margaret Smalley Thompson, son and daughter in law, David and Petra Thompson of Rock Hill, SC, daughter Amy Thompson of Waxhaw, NC, sister in law Barbara McMahan and husband Jim of Raleigh, NC, sister in law Jenny Gay and husband David of Waxhaw, NC, and brother in law Peter Welles of Carbondale, CO. He was a proud and doting Grandfather to his granddaughters, Faith and Kennedy Thompson. He also leaves behind his beloved nieces and nephews, Amanda, Christy, Wendy, Bobby, Heather, Rusty, Kevin, Joey, Corey, and Brittany.Larry was preceded in death by his parents Robert and Thomasine Thompson, brother Douglas Ralph Thompson, and sister Sondra Welles.Larry lived a full and happy life and was an incredibly hard working man. He loved his family beyond measure. He was immensely fascinated with Civil War history and was a member of Latham’s Artillery in Monroe, NC and a re-enactor with the NC 43rd for decades. He was also an active member of Walkersville Presbyterian Church in Waxhaw, NC. Larry had an amazing and wildly witty sense of humor that made everyone in his presence laugh. He never met a stranger and was richly blessed with friends throughout the community. His family is eternally grateful for the love and support given to him and his family during his last weeks on earth. No family could have ever wished for a better husband, father, or grandfather. He was truly one of a kind and will be loved, cherished, and forever missed.A service in celebration of Larry’s life will be held July 3, 2019 at 11:00 AM at Walkersville Presbyterian Church, 6204 Brady Road, Waxhaw, NC 28173. Visitation will precede the service beginning at 10:00 AM. Lancaster Funeral Home in Lancaster, SC is handling arrangements for Mr. Thompson.The family of Mr. Thompson would like to thank Charlotte Palliative and Hospice Care and his niece Heather Thompson RN for the love and care that he received.In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The American Cancer Society, 1901 Brunswick Avenue, Suite 100, Charlotte, NC 28207.
