Mr. King Solomon “Moon” Balkcum, 97, of Lancaster, passed away Saturday, December 15, 2018 at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte. He was born July 14, 1921 in Lumberton, NC, a son of the late King Solomon Balkcum, Sr. and Lettie Bell Mason Balkcum. Mr. Balkcum was a member of Immanuel Baptist Church and was a World War Two US Army veteran, having served in Burma, China, and India. He worked most of his life and retired from Springs Industries and later worked as a driver for H & H Chevrolet as well as several other auto dealers.A service to celebrate the life of Mr. Balkcum will be held Wednesday, December 19, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. at Immanuel Baptist Church with the Rev. Tim Anderson officiating. Burial with military honors will be in Lancaster Memorial Park.Mr. Balkcum is survived by a son in law, Sam Huey of Lancaster; four grandchildren, Danielle Hamer, Dr. Jennifer Turner, Matthew Balkcum and Pamela Moser; and eight great grandchildren. In addition to his parents, Mr. Balkcum is preceded in death by his beloved family, his wife, Pearl Buckley Balkcum, son, Jimmy D. Balkcum and his daughter, Sharon B. Huey.The family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, December 19, 2018 at Immanuel Baptist Church Social Hall, and other times at the home of Sam Huey, 1089 Omni Court, Lancaster.Memorial contributions may be made to Immanuel Baptist Church, 1152 Great Falls Highway, Lancaster, SC 29720.Lancaster Funeral Home & Cremation Service is serving the family of Mr. Balkcum.
