Gertrude Cauthen Dennis Obituary - Visitation & Funeral Information

Mrs. Gertrude Cauthen Dennis, 96, of Lancaster, widow of Raymond L. “Ray” Dennis, Sr., passed away Monday, July 11, 2022 at White Oak Manor. She was born December 22, 1925 in Douglas, Georgia, a daughter of the late Minor Columbus Cauthen and Edna McLean Cauthen. She graduated from Rock Hill High School in 1942 and Winthrop College in 1947 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Commerce. She later obtained her Master’s Degree in Elementary Education from Winthrop College. Mrs. Dennis had worked at Winthrop as secretary to registrar and served as secretary at executive office of Springs Industries to H. W. Close, Jr. She married Ray Dennis in 1953 and worked beside him at Ray’s Flower Shop as bookkeeper for over forty years. As a member of First United Methodist Church, she taught Sunday school, and served as past president of the United Methodist Women. She was a member of the Waxhaw Chapter of National Society of Daughters of the American Revolution. A service to celebrate the life of Mrs. Dennis will be held Tuesday, July 19, 2022 at 10:30 a.m. at First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Charles Phillips and Rev. Neal Woods officiating. Burial will be private. Mrs. Dennis is survived by a son, David McLean Dennis of Blairsville, GA; daughter-in-law, Judy Dennis of Charlotte, NC; a former daughter-in-law, Laura Dennis of Kennesaw, GA; a brother, Minor F. Cauthen of Columbia; four grandchildren, Elizabeth Godwin Hyland (Ben), Katherine Godwin Lanter (Alex), Natalie Dennis, Lindsey Dennis; two step grandchildren, Olin Osborne and Emily Osborne Miller (Joshua); three great-grandchildren, James Paul Lanter, Frances Kate Lanter and Olivia Anne Lanter; and one step grandson Jackson Beau Miller. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Laura Anne Dennis Godwin; a son Raymond L. Dennis, Jr., a grandson, Paul L. Godwin, Jr.; and a sister, Anne Cauthen Ellis. The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Monday, July 18, 2022, at Lancaster Funeral Home.
