Mr. Dennis Charles Straight, 59, graduated from this mortal realm on Wednesday, November 7, 2018. He died while serving the people of Lancaster County in his role as volunteer firefighter.Born in Niles, Ohio on April 15, 1959, he was the only child of Chester and Mary Straight, who preceded him in death. He is survived by his wife, Jane; two Mongrel dogs, Spaz and Brian; and his wife’s siblings; Michael (Audrey) Locke of California, Paul Magnussen of California, Lisa (Greg) Locke Stevens of California, Cecelia (Chuck) Magnussen Benson of California, Pamela (Jim) Magnussen Hoyt of Nevada, Brenda (Garth) Locke McGlasson of California, and many nieces and nephews spread over the country.Dennis, who graduated from Winthrop University in Rock Hill, was employed by Momentive Performance Materials in Charlotte, NC. He was a volunteer with the Charlotte Road/Van Wyck Volunteer Fire Department for twenty years. He served as a firefighter, training officer, Fire Chief and was currently serving as Assistant Chief. He also served on the Lancaster County Fire Commission. He also volunteered at Andrew Jackson State Park.Dennis was a true “Renaissance Man” with diverse interest from Shakespeare to motorcycles. He was a licensed amateur radio operator. He loved off-roading, primitive camping and hiking. He was a Cleveland Indians and Grateful Dead fan. He will be remembered for his quick wit and unflagging generosity of spirit. He was a great storyteller and an amateur photographer. He kept a travel journal and planned to someday write a book complete with his photographs, about the adventures he and his wife enjoyed and survived in the western desert wilderness.A memorial service to celebrate the life of Mr. Straight will be held Saturday, November 17, 2018 at 3:00 p.m. at Second Baptist Church with the Rev. Carson Overstreet officiating. Chief Straight will be honored with “Full Firefighter Services.” A gathering to celebrate his life will follow the service at Charlotte Road/Van Wyck Volunteer Fire Department, 4455 Old Hickory Road, Lancaster.The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Friday, November 16, 2018 at Lancaster Funeral Home.Memorial contributions may be made to Charlotte Road/Van Wyck Volunteer Fire Department, 4455 Old Hickory Road, Lancaster, SC 29720, the Van Wyck Presbyterian Church, PO Box 88, Van Wyck, SC 29744.Lancaster Funeral Home & Cremation Service is serving the family of Mr. Straight.
