Caroline Moss Emanuel, widow of Dr. Benjamin F. Emanuel, Sr., died March 18, 2018, in Anderson, SC. She celebrated her 90th birthday on February 16, 2018.Born in Orangeburg, SC, Caroline was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Dibble Moss. As a child, Caroline was raised by her parents in the Orangeburg home of her paternal grandparents, the Honorable and Mrs. Benjamin Hart Moss, but she later moved with her parents to their home on the Columbia Road. She was a member of the Orangeburg High School Class of 1945 and the Winthrop College Class of 1949. Although she dearly loved Orangeburg, Caroline moved after college to Lancaster, SC, where she worked for several years as a Springs Cotton Mills secretary. On March 30, 1952, she married Dr. Emanuel, and they remained happily married until his death in July 1988. Together, they raised three children: Margaret Temple-Smith (Nicholas), of Gainesville, FL; Dr. Benjamin Francis Emanuel, Jr. (Bonnie), of Anderson; and Anthony Moss Emanuel (Christie), of Lexington, SC. Several years after her husband’s death, Caroline met Howard Hush of Lancaster, who was thereafter her constant companion. In October 2014, health issues compelled Caroline’s move to Anderson.Besides her children and their spouses, Caroline is survived by five grandchildren, whom she adored: Dr. Anthony Jacob Emanuel, of Mt. Pleasant, SC; Elizabeth Moss Emanuel, of Alexandria, VA; Caroline Christian Emanuel, of Lexington; Benjamin Francis Emanuel, III, of Raleigh, NC; and Rebecca Harman Emanuel, of Anderson.Caroline was a member of Christ Episcopal Church of Lancaster. She was also a former member of the Waxhaws Chapter, DAR; the Huguenot Society of South Carolina; the Twentieth Century Club; and the Green Gardeners.Loyal and vivacious, Caroline lived a happy and full life. She loved her family, friends (of which she had many), animals (of which she also had many), sports, music, dancing, the North Carolina mountains, and the South Carolina beaches. She frequently opened her home to family and friends (and animals), and she often worked tirelessly and without fanfare to aid those in need. Though in recent years she was slowed by deteriorating physical health, Caroline still felt young at heart, and she was comforted by her faith. She was a true Proverbs 31 Woman. For these and many other reasons, she will be greatly missed, but she will never be forgotten. At Caroline’s request, she will be laid to rest beside her late husband at Lancaster Memorial Park during a private service conducted by her nephew, the Rev. Philip Grantham Emanuel, of Florence, SC.The family would like to thank the staff at the Garden House (Anderson); NHC Healthcare Anderson; and Caris Healthcare Anderson for their patience, kindness, and care over the last several years.Lancaster Funeral Home & Cremation Service is serving the family of Mrs. Emanuel.
